A visit to Peckover House, Wisbech

Last weekend I was in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, on a family visit, and we went along to visit Peckover House, s National Trust property in the town. The house was built as a merchant's house in 1722, and for 150 years of its history it was owned by the Peckover family. They were Quakers, and they operated a bank from the premises from 1792 until 1876.
I loved the gardens which are around two acres in size, although they are laid out in such a way that they seem to be far bigger. All in all it was a very enjoyable visit, and a good way to spend a couple of hours relaxing. I should also add that our trip to the Red Barn Tea Rooms was also very enjoyable, even if a little fattening!
I loved this tree with its almost white bark.
The gardens stretched a long way, with plenty to see.
The borders were well laid out, and although my photos don't really portray it well enough, there was plenty of colour. There were two very active beehives in the gardens, and you could purchase honey from them in the Gift Shop.

Sharing the love of Christ through Heaven's Family

I have been a supporter of Heaven's Family, of which this is just one part of the work that they do, for many years now. It's an organisation which I can commend to you for your support. The following email about the continuing work in North Korea has just arrived on my PC.

Posted: 29 Aug 2011 10:29 AM PDT

Dear Friends,
Just this month we helped fund the smuggling of food for 45 families (about 200 people) inside North Korea. As a result, we received the following letter that was secretly carried back out of the country, written by one of those blessed by your compassion. Here is the actual letter with the translation following….
Our life on this side is like going deeper and deeper into a mountain range: we live expecting it will be better every year, but faced with ever harsher reality, it cannot be explained with anything. Such a boundless misery, the whole population is suffering from starvation. That is, there is no compensation for struggle no matter how great; there is no profit in doing business. Consequently, beggars continue to increase in number on the street.
Occasionally, homes are empty overnight, and rumor goes around saying the occupants ran away somewhere. It is now common everywhere to disregard a person lying dead on the street and for no one to care. It is because such things happen too often. So, in the midst of this, it became possible not only for us to overcome this hardship, but also to share with those who are suffering around us.
Indeed, if God hadn’t helped us, we’d have become beggars now. We do not know how to repay your favors. We can only tell and pray to Him. We have experienced God’s marvelous works here. Truly we thank you.
Thanks for praying and giving to feed our suffering North Korean brothers and sisters in Christ through the North Korean Christians Fund.
On their behalf,

Elisabeth Servant
Director, North Korean Christians Fund

GOD'S WALL OF PICTURES
"And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire."
Revelation 20:15 (King James Version)
God's pictures are in a different place than on the wall like we see in homes.  God's wall of pictures is in the Book of Life.  I believe when we are saved that our names and also our pictures are recorded in the Book of Life.  Just as we like to look at the pictures on the wall, God also likes to look at our pictures.
Our Scripture verse is one of the saddest verses in the Bible.  If our names are not written in the book of life, we will go to hell instead of Heaven.  What a terrifying thought that someone would go to hell!  Christians need to fall on their knees and cry out to God for the salvation of their family and their friends.
Before I had arthritis, I used to have my devotions on my knees.  I would kneel at the side of my bed and sing to Jesus and read my Bible out loud and pray out loud.  O what joy filled my heart when I was able to kneel and worship my precious Saviour!  I can't kneel any more because of my arthritis.
If you have family members or if you have friends who have never accepted Jesus as personal Saviour, pray for their salvation.  However, just praying for them is not enough.  Our family and our friends need to see the difference that Jesus made in our life.  Do they see Jesus in your actions?
My name and picture are recorded in the Book of Life.  Is your name and picture recorded in the Book of Life?  If not, I urge you, I plead with you to give your heart and life to Jesus before it is too late!  One day, it will be too late for you to invite Jesus into your heart.  Don't miss out on spending eternity with Jesus.

Alan Watson and the Merseyside Big Band

Went out on Thursday evening to Maghull Town Hall in Liverpool (UK), with my friend, the Runcorn-based singer Alan Watson, who records with Sheer Joy Music. He sings with the Merseyside Big Band at their regular monthly visit to the venue, and I was treated to a great bit of swing. I especially loved the alto sax solos. Great evening!

WHEN WE STRAY
"I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me; for I have redeemed thee."
Isaiah 44:22 (King James Version)
People think that Christians are supposed to be perfect people.  Christians are not perfect.  They are only saved sinners.  I received an email from someone who wrote "I stopped going to church and started going to bars with my old friends.  I have also started drinking again and I am so ashamed of myself."
I replied and wrote "Go talk to your pastor and tell your pastor what you told me."  The person emailed me again and wrote "Do you think Jesus still loves me?"  I told that person "Yes, Jesus still loves you and He will always love you.  There is nothing you could do that would make Him stop loving you."
I submit to you on the authority of God's Word that Jesus does love us when we fail Him and hurt Him.  "The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee" (Jeremiah 31:3).
However, just because we know that Jesus will always love us is no excuse to deliberately do things that hurts Him.  It should be just the opposite.  We should do everything we can possibly do to make Him happy.  We know that Jesus loves us.  Do we love Him?  If so, how much do we love Him?
If you have strayed, confess your sins and return to Him.  Don't allow satan to keep you away from your Saviour.  Jesus said "return unto me; for I have redeemed thee".  Jesus is waiting with a heart full of love and with His arms open wide for you to come back to Him.

Why Go To Church?

A Church-goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday. "I've gone for 30 years now," he wrote, "and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons. But for the life of me, I can't remember a single one of them, so I think I'm wasting my time, and the pastors are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all."

This started a real controversy in the 'Letters to the Editor' column, much to the delight of the editor. It went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher:

"I've been married for 30 years now.  In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know this.. They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today.  Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!" When you are DOWN to nothing..... God is UP to something! Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible and receives the impossible!
Thank God for our physical AND our spiritual nourishment!

Here's a few thoughts for today . . .

"When Satan is knocking at your door, simply say,
"Jesus, could you get that for me?"

When you are down to nothing, God is UP to something!

Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible and receives the impossible!

Alan Watson sings 'When I'm With You', a great song by Songwriting duo Colin Gordon-Farleigh & Greg Scheer

The other day I posted a video of an interview with me about the song 'When I'm With You' filmed when Alan Watson was videoed performing the song. Now here is a first rush of the video shot by a member of the Altrincham Video Club. Hope you enjoy it. The song is featured on Alan Watson's current CD, 'Taking it Easy.'

Grace Bawden - Un Bel Di Vedremo (Madam Butterfly)

Once again I am wowed by the amazing voice of the very talented young Australian songbird, Grace Bawden.  At the close of this outstanding performance Grace was given a well-deserved standing ovation by the assembled audience.

ARE WE WISE
"Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding."
Proverbs 17:28 (King James Version)
I used to have a terrible temper before I was saved.  I said ugly, sarcastic and cruel words to people.  When the redeeming blood of Jesus was applied to my heart for the forgiveness of my sins, I no longer had the desire to say cruel words to people.  However, once in a while I still lost my temper.
Christians are not perfect.  They are just sinners who have been forgiven.  Before we are saved, satan doesn't have to worry about us because we are serving him.  When we accept Jesus as our personal Saviour, it makes satan very angry and he will launch vicious poisonous attacks against us.
When people say cruel, sarcastic and hateful words to us, we need to be quiet or as my Mother said to me many times when I was a child "Keep your big mouth shut!"  It is hard for us to be quiet when someone is saying cruel words to us.  Sometimes, we can't do it.
It is then that we need to cry out to Jesus for help and ask Him to put a zipper on our lips so we won't say cruel words to people that hurt them and also hurt Him.  We must never forget that when we hurt people, we also hurt Jesus.  Our precious Saviour has been abused and hurt enough.
Are we wise?  If we say cruel words to people who hurt us, we are not wise.  Heavenly Father, please forgive us for saying words to deliberately hurt people.  Please help us to say kind and loving words instead of hateful words to people who hurt us.   Amen.

Interviews with Colin Gordon-Farleigh about the background to the song 'When I'm With You'

Last week I went to Altrincham with the Runcorn-based singer Alan Watson where he was being filmed performing my song When I'm With You, which is one of the tracks on his latest album release.  The song is a result of the ongoing collaboration between Greg Scheer who composed the music and myself, who wrote the lyrics.

After his filming was over they filmed me being interviewed about the origin of the song, together with Alan Watson and Jack Ebden.

CAIR-Chicago attacks high school curriculum, wants to rewrite history

The CAIR-Chicago post below (highlights added) falls into the category of “you’ve got to be kidding me!”

CAIR-Chicago is objecting to a curriculum used in the Chicago school district. CAIR-Chicago’s complaint?

The worksheets in question, produced by MindSparks, a
California based educational resource company, teaches
students that the religion of Islam is oppressive towards
women, inherently violent, and played an important role
in harboring slavery.

CAIR-Chicago claims verses from the Qur’an used in this curriculum are “taken out of context.” This is a typical response from Muslim Brotherhood front organizations like CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations). The problem is, anyone who has ever read the Qur’an knows two things:

1)  There is very little “context” to its writings.
2)  It does contain numerous passages that make clear
women hold second-class status to men, that call for
violent jihad against “infidels,” and that sanction
the taking of slaves in the prosecution of jihad.

Finally, we see what appears to be a factual rendering of the history of Islam. For instance, the curriculum states, accurately, that “slavery was common in Islam.” Various historians and scholars estimate that between 14 and 18 million Africans were enslaved by Muslims from the 7th century to the 12th century.

CAIR-Chicago clearly wants to rewrite history because it obviously doesn’t want Chicago high school students to be exposed to these “inconvenient truths.”

While the high school is not mentioned in the post below, you can contact the Chicago public schools office via email and thank the school for using this curriculum. Encourage them to retain the curriculum and resist the interference of CAIR-Chicago, which is part of the national CAIR organization. Make sure you mention that CAIR was an unindicted co-conspirator in the largest terrorism financing trial in America’s history and that it has been identified by the Justice Department as linked to the terrorist organization Hamas.

No school district should be paying any attention to CAIR or any of its local affiliates.

Staff Attorney Rabya Khan Meets with High School Regarding Anti-Muslim Worksheets
CAIR-Chicago l August 16, 2011
http://www.cairchicago.org/2011/08/16/staff-attorney-rabya-khan-meets-with-high-school-regarding-anti-muslim-worksheets/
By Ben Small, Communications Intern

CAIR-Chicago Staff Attorney Rabya Khan met with officials at a Chicago-area high school on Monday, August 15th, regarding a complaint CAIR-Chicago received by a parent alleging that the high school’s social studies class is distributing misleading worksheets on Islam. The worksheets in question, produced by MindSparks, a California based educational resource company, teaches students that the religion of Islam is oppressive towards women, inherently violent, and played an important role in harboring slavery.

One of the readings contains verses from the Quran which are quoted out-of-context wrongly giving the impression that women are considered inferior to men.
A corresponding worksheet then asks: “The Qur’an stresses the equality of all believers. Yet many say its views about men and women definitely give men more power. How does the top passage here from the Qu’ran support this view?” The reading is accompanied by a photo of two women in burqa, a full-body covering worn by only a minority of Muslim women worldwide. The inauthentic translation, imagery, and presentation of information leads students to a biased conclusion about the status of men and women in Islam.

Another reading implies that slavery was an encouraged practice in Islam, and then the corresponding worksheet states “Slavery was common in Islam; however, it took several very different forms. […] Prepare a brief talk to the class on what you learn about these two forms of slavery. Title your talk, “Slavery’s Many Forms in the Islamic World.”” Wrongly suggesting some sort of link between slavery and Islam. In reality, the Qu’ran strongly condemned slavery and offered enticing rewards to those who freed slaves. Prophet Muhammad himself freed numerous slaves and the situation for slaves greatly improved with the advent of Islam.

In the MindSparks’ textbook The Rise of the Modern Middle East, lesson titles include “Islam and Islamic Radicalism”. The parent who brought these reading materials to CAIR-Chicago’s attention expressed concern that that over emphasis on the small number of radical Muslims in the world will reinforce stereotypes that link Islam and terrorism and that students will not receive a balanced understanding of Islam and Muslims.

Rabya Khan met with school officials to convey the importance of presenting balanced perspectives and not perpetuating stereotypes. CAIR-Chicago has requested that the school remove the worksheets, and not use them again or any similar worksheets. Rabya also provided a resource list of organizations that can conduct workshops on Islam, including CAIR-Chicago, and is compiling a list of educational resource companies with balanced materials on Islam and Muslims.

A WONDERFUL LIFE
"And a certain scribe came, and said unto him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest."
Matthew 8:19 (King James Version)
One of my favourite movies that I watch over and over is "It's a Wonderful Life".  You and I can have a wonderful life if we will allow Jesus to be the Master of our heart and our life.  I think sometimes instead of following Jesus we go where we want to go and we also do what we want to do.
It's no wonder at all that we have days where everything goes wrong.  If we are not following Jesus, we will have bad days.  Jesus has made it very clear where He wants us to go.  He wants us to go to people who are hurting and who haven't accepted Him as personal Saviour and tell them how much He loves them.
Have you told Jesus that you will follow Him?  If you have, are you following Him?  If you're not following Him, why aren't you?  Jesus loves you so much that He gave His life for you.  He doesn't ask much from us and He has done so much for us.  We should be eager to do anything that will make Him happy.
One of the ways that He wants us to follow Him is in the area of loving one another unconditionally.  He showed us how to love unconditionally when He allowed them to crucify Him on the cross for our sins.  He forgave us while He was still hanging on the cruel cross in agony and excruciating pain.
Are we willing to forgive those who have hurt us?  I have to be honest and admit that there are times when I have trouble forgiving those who hurt me but then I remember that Jesus forgave me from the cross.  Have you forgiven the people who have hurt you just as Jesus has forgiven you?

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton working with UN, OIC to criminalize free speech!

Here's a fresh report from Act for America which everyone should read if they are concerned about the right to free speech.

The assault on our Constitution continues.

As we have reported extensively, Captain Paul Fields was disciplined for refusing to obey an order that violated his constitutional rights. We are certain a Muslim police officer would not have been ordered by the Tulsa police chief to attend Christian church services and Sunday school classes.

Now read the latest attack on our freedoms below, posted recently in Jihad Watch (highlights added). The OIC (Organization of the Islamic Conference) continues its assault on free speech at the UN through the advance of resolution 16/18. This resolution, cloaked in terms such as “defamation of religion,” is a thinly veiled attempt to criminalize speech that criticizes Islam.

But now, in an ominous development, according to a story published by the International Islamic News Agency, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has joined the effort to implement this effort to criminalize free speech.

Secretary of State Clinton says State Department will coordinate with OIC on legal ways to implement UN's resolution criminalizing "defamation of religion"

http://www.jihadwatch.org/2011/08/secretary-of-state-clinton-says-state-department-will-coordinate-with-oic-on-legal-ways-to-implement.html

Moving rapidly to criminalize telling the truth about how Islamic jihadists use the texts and teachings of Islam to encourage violence and supremacism. Free Speech Death Watch Alert, and an update on this story: "OIC/Islamophobia: OIC Observatory warned since 2009 against the growth of the extreme right in Europe, Washington plans to host a meeting on resolution opposing defamation of religions," from the International Islamic News Agency, August 1 (thanks to all who sent this in):

JEDDAH, Ramadan 1/Aug 1 (IINA)-During the next few months,
Washington plans to host a coordination meeting to discuss with the
Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) how to implement resolution
no. 16/18 on combating defamation of religions, and how to prevent
stereotypes depicting religions and their followers; as well as disseminating
religious tolerance, which has been endorsed by the UN Human Rights
Council last March, in agreement with Western countries. The resolution
was adopted after lengthy discussions held between the OIC and countries
in which the phenomenon of Islamophobia
is in the rise.

The U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had announced the intention

of the U.S. State Department to organize a coordination meeting during
her participation in the meeting which she co-chaired with the OIC
Secretary General, Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu in Istanbul on
15th July 2011. The meeting issued a joint statement emphasizing the
dire need for the implementation of resolution 16/18.

According to informed sources in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation,
the two sides, in addition to other European parties, will hold a number of
specialized meetings of experts in law and religion in order to finalize the
legal aspect on how to better implement the UN resolution.

The sources said that the upcoming meetings aim at developing a legal

basis for the UN Human Rights Council’s resolution which help in enacting
domestic laws for the countries involved in the issue, as well as
formulating international laws preventing inciting hatred resulting from
the continued defamation of religions.

On the other hand, the OIC Secretary General, Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu,

stressed that the crime committed recently in Norway was a result of
the rise of the extreme right in Europe and its easy mobility in political
circles. He said that the OIC had warned several times against of what
might be called institutionalization of the phenomenon of Islamophobia
through the involvement of the European extreme right in government
institutions and political action....

Andrea Warnock sings 'Love is Blind'

Country singer, Andrea Warnock, sings her new song Love is Blind which I think is a great Country number. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Daisy Chapman sings 'Prisoner' by Tony Harris

Prisoner is a great song, written by Bristol-based Tony Harris and sung by Daisy Chapman. This is a song with a strong message that speaks directly to your heart and soul.  All people have the right to expect that their dignity is upheld, yet there are always individuals and regimes who feel that they can dispose of people's dignity as they feel. This is a beautiful song which deserves the widest audience possible. I hope that you will recommend it to your friends, dear reader.

THE ONLY WAY
"Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?  Jesus said unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."
John 14:5,6 (King James Version)
There are many people who are trying to get to Heaven by doing kind things for others.  These things are wonderful and we should do kind things for others.  However, doing these things will never get us to Heaven.  The only way to Heaven is through the blood of Jesus.
Unless the precious redeeming blood of Jesus is applied to our heart for the forgiveness of our sins, we will never go to Heaven.   Jesus is also our joy.  The Bible makes it very clear that it is only when we are in the presence of Jesus that we have real joy.
This is one of my favourite verses in the Bible.  "Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore" (Psalm 16:11).  There have been many times when I have had so much joy in my heart that I felt like I was going to explode with happiness.
Jesus is also the only way for us to keep going when satan hurls his vicious poisonous darts of lies and discouragement at us.  We are powerless to defeat satan.  This is why we need to cry out to Jesus to help us when we are discouraged and hurting.  Jesus knows how it feels to hurt and be discouraged.
If you are hurting and discouraged, cry out to Jesus.  He will be faithful to pick you up and carry you through all the dark valleys of your life and set you once again on the mountain top of happiness.  You can trust Jesus with your heart and your life.

UK Riots: Following the Ten Commandments would have made the difference

The Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:2-17 NKJV)
1“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of
Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods
before Me.
If those involved in the UK riots had obeyed this command then
there would have been no riots.
2“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness
of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth
beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not
bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your
God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on
the children to the third and fourth generations of those who
hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love
Me and keep My Commandments.
If those involved in the UK riots had obeyed this command
then there would have been no rioting or looting.
3“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain,
for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name
in vain.
If those involved in the UK riots had obeyed this command
there would have been no riots.
4“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you
shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the
Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work:
you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant,
nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger
who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made
the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them,
and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the
Sabbath day and hallowed it.
If those involved in the UK riots had obeyed this command
there would have been no riots
5“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be
long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
If those involved in the UK riots had obeyed this command
they would have learned from their parents to respect others
and themselves, and there would have been no riots
6“You shall not murder.
If those involved in the UK riots had obeyed this command
there would have been no deaths as a direct result of the rioting.
7“You shall not commit adultery.
If those involved in the UK riots had obeyed this command
there would have been greater respect for other people and for
God's laws, and there would have been no riots.
8“You shall not steal.
If those involved in the UK riots had obeyed this command
there would have been no looting and no rioting.
9“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
If those involved in the UK riots had obeyed this command
then respect for both life and property of others would have
ensured that there would have been no riots
10“You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet
your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant,
nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's.”
If those involved in the UK riots had obeyed this command
there would have been no looting and no rioting.

Simon's Cat in 'Cat Man Do'

It gives me great pleasure once again to introduce you to the latest 'Simon's Cat' video, created by the talented Simon Tofield. I love Simon's work because, as a cat-lover myself, I recognise all of the antics that the cat gets up to in the cartoons.
Cat Man Do was the very first of the increasingly popular cartoons about Simon's Cat to appear on-line, and since then he has appeared in Books, videos, a game and his very own comic strip. In this cartoon, Simon's cat resorts to ever-increasing attempts to wake up its sleeping owner to the fact that it wants to be fed in order to satisfy its ravenous hunger.

Joanne Lowe's Meditations

NOT A SIN
"Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.  And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt."
Matthew 26:38,39 (King James Version)
Someone emailed me and wrote "It is a sin to be discouraged".  Jesus was very discouraged when He prayed this prayer.  We know that Jesus was perfect and that He never sinned so it is not a sin to be discouraged.  Jesus tells us that we will have tribulation.
We read in the Bible "These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace.  In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world" (John 16:33).  A pastor said one time in a sermon "If you don't have any problems right now, wait a few minutes".
When we surrender our life in full time service to Jesus, it makes satan very angry and he will do all in his power to discourage and defeat us.  We are powerless to defeat satan on our own.  It takes the power of Jesus working through us to give us the victory in difficult situations.  Only Jesus can defeat satan.
Remember that Jesus is the one who gives us the victory in situations and we must always give Him the credit. "I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing" (John 15:5).  Are you giving Jesus the credit?
