A Pinch & A Punch

Today we celebrate the 1st of November! It will be a day that we can be especially thankful for. Why? Because every day that we have is a gift from God, and we should accept each day with shouts of joy for the blessing!

When I was a child at school it was a favourite thing to say the expression, A pinch and a punch, the first of the month! accompanied by a pinch and a punch which you had to be quick to avoid! I wondered what the origin of the expression was, and so I looked it up and found the following explanation: This saying originated from old England times when people thought that witches existed. People thought that salt would make a witch weak, so the pinch part is pinching of the salt, and the punch part was to banish the witch. The witch would be weak from the salt so the punch was to banish her. I don't know whether the origin is factual or whether anyone has a better one for it. I wonder what sayings you might know for the first day of a new month.
