I Wonder
They tell me I'm remembered
now that I've passed away;
and yet you'd laugh along with me
at the things that some folks say.
They talk of me with untrue tales
of things I've done and said:
"Oh! What a laugh he used to be,
great pity now he's dead."
"He used to be such fun," they say,
a great intellectual wit;
when all the time they really think,
'Dear me, he was a nit!'
If only they could tell, right now,
that I know what they say;
I wonder --- would it be the same
as they said yesterday?
