The Village Green
White stands out against the green,
silence from the watching crowd;
the captain of the village team
starts walking, idolised and proud.
Slowly to the pitch he walks,
fifty runs to win the day ---
calls his wicket loud and clear,
then starts to make a hero's play.
The local crown all know him well
from many years of play.
They whisper, silent to themselves,
for certain now, they'll win the day.
Forty-two: the sun beats down;
he swings again the willow bat.
Twice again a boundary --- they've won!
The crowd, tumultuous, cry, "Howzat!"
